What viruses do we test for?
TestCenter Danmark tests for viruses in connection with a number of projects. In Virus Measurement in Denmark, we test for all the viruses listed below. In DANFLU-2, we only test for influenza virus.
Most respiratory tract infections, especially in the upper respiratory tract, cause only mild illness and resolve on their own without treatment. Most people catch a cold or another mild respiratory tract infection several times a year. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
Below you will find a short description of each virus.
Influenza virus
Influenza virus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
TestCenter Danmark tests for influenza virus A and influenza virus B.
Parainfluenza virus
Parainfluenza virus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
Parainfluenza virus is prevalent throughout the year and typically causes milder symptoms than influenza virus.
There are four different types of parainfluenza virus: 1, 2, 3 and 4. TestCenter Danmark tests for all four types, but in the web app the result will read ‘parainfluenza virus’.
SARS-CoV-2
SARS-CoV-2 is the coronavirus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic.
SARS-CoV-2 is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
Coronavirus (not SARS-CoV-2)
Coronavirus (not SARS-CoV-2) is a common cause of respiratory tract infection and colds that for most people resolve on their own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
There are different types of corona virus. TestCenter Danmark tests for the four types that most often cause colds: coronavirus 229E, coronavirus OC43, coronavirus NL63 and coronavirus HKU1.
Most people have been or will be infected with the above-mentioned coronaviruses several times in their lives, as these viruses have been prevalent in society since long before SARS-CoV-2.
SARS-CoV-2, which caused the COVID-19 pandemic, is also a coronavirus. People who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 will get the test result ‘SARS-CoV-2 påvist’.
Rhinovirus
Rhinovirus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
Rhinovirus is a frequent cause of colds in both summer and winter.
Enterovirus
Entorovirus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
Rhinovirus/enterovirus
In a few cases, rhinovirus and enterovirus may be difficult to distinguish from each other in a PCR analysis. If you test positive, in a small number of cases, you will therefore get the test result ‘Rhino/enterovirus påvist’.
Both viruses are a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
RS virus
RS virus (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
There are two types of RS virus: A and B. TestCenter Denmark tests for both types.
Adenovirus
Adenovirus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection and colds that for most people resolve on their own own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
This virus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection that for most people resolves on its own. In case of severe or prolonged symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
If you get the test result ‘Kunne ikke analyseres’ (Could not be analysed)
Where do I find my test result?
If you participate in Virus monitoring in Denmark you can also find the test results at sundhed.dk. At sundhed.dk you can see whether the sample is positive for a specific type of virus. For example: If we have detected influenza virus A H1N1, this will appear on sundhed.dk, while the web app will show influenza virus A.
